Our Staircase Services
Not all staircases are created equal. Woodboys offers Lowcountry homeowners all of the services you may need to redo your stairs, from new wood treads and risers to luxury vinyl plank (LVP) stair treads.
Here’s a quick look at what we offer during our free in-home consultations:
New Wood Treads & Risers
Our installation crews can build your staircase right on your existing stringers. This allows us to install all-new 1-inch-thick wooden treads, manufactured for stability and strength. Woodboys will order unfinished stair treads that coordinate with the rest of your wood flooring. When possible, we order the same species and grade for consistency.
From here, our installation team will sand and finish your treads off-site in their workshop. This helps keep your home mess-free and speeds up the installation process when the crew arrives. It also enables them to find the best color match for your existing floors when the exact color is unknown.
We also offer two options for new risers: primed white or custom stained to match the stair treads. These, too, will be taken care of with the same attention to detail and craftsmanship as your new treads.
Retrofit Stair Treads
Sometimes, a complete rebuild of your staircase isn’t the best option. When a rebuild isn’t right for your home, Woodboys offers retrofit treads that cover your existing stair structure. Retrofit treads are popular with Charleston-area homeowners for converting carpeted stairs to wood—no need to tear out your existing staircase to make the switch.
These retrofit stair treads will be identical visually to the wood treads we would use in a rebuild, but they are thinner at just 5/8-inch, allowing us to keep your stairs in code without tearing out your existing material.
Retrofit treads are also real wood treads, coming unfinished in the species of your choice. They offer the same durability and beauty as new wood treads, with less noise, dust, and disruption in your home. Our crews will still custom stain and finish them off-site to match your floors for a seamless installation.
Most retrofit stair installations are done in just one day because we take care of this prep work before we show up at your home.
Custom Staining & Finishing
Staining and finishing flooring requires an artist’s touch. Our installation crews prioritize attention to detail and quality craftsmanship as they bring your design to life. All unfinished wood treads are custom stained and finished by the same crews who will handle your installation. They can match the color of a prefinished floor or use the same stain formula as a site-finished floor.
Color is crucial, but so is the gloss level. They will ensure the gloss level of your new treads matches the existing flooring, whether you need a matte finish or a high-gloss option.
Your staircase benefits from personalized attention to detail so that we can make the visual as seamless as possible.
LVP Stair Treads (Matched to Your Flooring)
At Woodboys, our focus for the last forty years has been wood. But we understand that homeowners may want something different these days. Luxury vinyl plank and laminate flooring are both excellent flooring solutions for Lowcountry families who need extra durability and waterproof options. The only problem is, what do you do about your stairs?
Many of our most popular waterproof flooring manufacturers also make retrofit stair treads that are exact matches for their flooring. These treads have the exact same visuals as the floors, making it easy to create your custom staircase.
Even if your LVP floor doesn’t have matching treads, Woodboys can still help. We also make treads out of the flooring and the manufacturer’s matching stair-nosing.
Wood Species & Material Options
Stair treads come in a variety of wood species so that we can match your floor as closely as possible.
Our manufacturers carry red and white oak treads (for both standard and retrofit), but we can also get hickory and maple treads. When it makes sense, we even request character-grade treads to better reflect the existing flooring.
Exotic species are sometimes harder to come by: Brazilian cherry, Brazilian pecan, tigerwood, and more. We do our best to source exact matches for our homeowners whenever possible. However, sometimes, it makes more sense to select a more readily available species to suit a tight timeline or a limited budget.
Your flooring expert will select a wood species with a grain and character similar to the floor you select. Then, the treads will still be custom stained to match your exotic floor as closely as possible. Choosing the right species and color makes all the difference when planning your stair remodel.

Stairs FAQs
Everything you need to know about updating your stairs.
Can you match my existing hardwood floor?
Yes, we can match an existing hardwood floor. Our installation crews are experts when it comes to custom staining, ensuring your stairs blend seamlessly with the rest of your Lowcountry home.
How long does a stair retrofit take?
It can take us a couple of weeks to order your materials, custom stain them, and finish them before they are ready for your home. Once the materials are ready, we can usually complete the entire retrofit in a single day.
Do I need to replace the whole staircase or just the treads?
You don’t need to replace the whole staircase. While we can use standard wood treads and rebuild on your existing stringers, retrofit treads are also a great option that minimizes mess and cost.
Do you offer LVP or vinyl stair treads to match my flooring?
Some manufacturers do offer stair treads that match their most popular floors. If matching treads are not available for your floor, we can still create stair treads for your job out of your flooring and the manufacturer’s matching stair-nosing.
How much does it cost to redo stairs?
Cost depends on materials (wood treads, retrofit treads, or vinyl treads), wood species, and the specific treads required. A free in-home consultation includes a full quote.
